Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius returns from battle to find that his wife and son have been murdered. As a corrupt prince ascends the throne, Maximus is enslaved and forced to fight as a gladiator. Determined to seek vengeance on the man who took his family from him, Maximus battles to the death in the Colosseum.
